Ep 30. What is Power For?

Ever since the rise of revolutionary protests in the Middle East that were initially dubbed the “Arab Spring” before devolving into more of a long and stormy winter, Muslims have increasingly been making their presence established in the realm of political activism and social justice movements. Islamism and Sharia are stable hot topics of discussion that garner anxious attention from observers who do not understand what these terms mean given how difficult it has been to agree on a single definition for either of them.

From the Muslim side, it is important to take a step back and reflect on the role that Islam plays in a Muslim’s cosmological understanding of what being in this world entails. In the midst of all Muslim activism and political engagements is a critical question that has to be answered with crystal clarity: why are we in the precarious position that we find ourselves today?

This episode is based on an article published in Iman Wire that can be found here. Topics discussed include the events that occurred during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah between the Beloved ﷺ and Quraysh, their subsequent surrender to him after they broke the terms, and the role Imam Abū Hāmid al-Ghazālī played in the spiritual development of Salahuddin al-Ayyubi, before the latter liberated Jerusalem in 1187 from the Crusaders.
